It was built for Benjamin Iddings, probably between 1797 and 1809.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be possibly the oldest structure in Miami County. It was built for Benjamin Iddings, a Quaker settler described in local history as a prominent citizen, and shows early pioneer log construction on the Stillwater River.","narrative":"Set on the grounds of the Brukner Nature Center near Troy, this two-story, four-room log house was built for Benjamin Iddings, a Scotch-Irish Quaker who came to the Stillwater River bank around 1797 after earlier moves through Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Warren County, Ohio. He chose the site beside a spring that still flows on the bluffs above the river. The exact construction date is uncertain; it may be as early as 1797, though a patent date of 1804 is also cited, and his grandson was almost certainly born there in 1809. The walls use notched log construction beneath weatherboard, with a central front and rear door, an interior stone chimney and a boulder foundation. Local history calls Iddings a prominent citizen, and the house is considered possibly the oldest structure in Miami County. Although deteriorated, a campaign has begun to restore it and use it in the nature center's interpretive program.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Benjamin Iddings (listed as the builder on the data sheet)","architectural_style":"Log","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as deteriorated, with missing sashes, weatherboard in poor repair and a partly collapsed cellar; a campaign has been started to restore it as part of the nature center's interpretive program.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.502691-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001497.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001497/e687bb3318-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001497/e687bb3318-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ppfox","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Iddings_House2_Brukner_Nature_Center.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ppfox</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Iddings_House2_Brukner_Nature_Center.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990293","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Iddings_Log_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q116468494"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/miami-county/iddings-benjamin-log-house-76001497/"}
