It was built in 1859 by elder George Browning Reed for the New School Presbyterian congregation.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the church as an excellent Romanesque Revival building and a representative example of the best ante-bellum builders' craft in Troy. It also notes the building has had few changes. It served the New School Presbyterians and, after reunification in 1870, the unified First Presbyterian congregation.","narrative":"Built in 1859 by church elder George Browning Reed, this brick church at the corner of Franklin and Walnut Streets in Troy, Ohio, reflects Romanesque Revival design. The walls are nine-course American bond brick on a stone foundation, with tall, narrow, round-arched stained glass windows set in recessed bays. A flat-roofed tower at the front has wedge buttresses, a corbel table and a crenellated parapet. Inside, an organ gallery was added in 1868, the choir and organ moved to the front in 1875, memorial windows were installed around 1895, and electric lights and an electric organ arrived in 1901. A one-story Colonial Revival addition from about 1930 sits at the rear. The building was erected by the New School Presbyterians, who split from the Old School in 1838 and built a frame church in 1846. The brick sanctuary was dedicated in 1860. The congregation became First Presbyterian Church when the groups reunited in 1870. The building is valued as a well-preserved example of Troy's ante-bellum craftsmanship.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"George Browning Reed","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied, and in religious use; owned by the church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.246883-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001493.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001493/6567d4d92e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001493/6567d4d92e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_in_Troy,_western_angle.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_in_Troy,_western_angle.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"75001491","name":"Troy Public Square","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/troy-public-square-75001491/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990299","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_(Troy,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453644"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/miami-county/first-presbyterian-church-76001493/"}
