Kirtland, a noted nineteenth-century physician, scientist and naturalist, during his years in Poland before 1837. His later home in Lakewood has been razed, so this is the only residence still associated with him. Despite alterations, it still conveys the spirit of the period when he lived there.","narrative":"This large wooden frame house in Poland, Ohio, shows the Greek Revival style, with a sandstone ashlar foundation, a Doric entablature with triglyphs, and monumental two-story Doric corner pilasters. It was probably built in 1832. A one-and-a-half story rear wing, with large cooking fireplaces, may be older than the main block. Around 1900 the front porch was added and the entrance altered, and the first-story facade was refaced. Original Greek Revival woodwork survives in the east parlor. The house was the home of Jared P. Kirtland (1793-1877), a physician who practiced in Poland from 1823 and served in the Ohio Legislature. In 1837 he helped with Ohio's first geological survey and catalogued 585 vertebrates. He later helped found the Cleveland Medical College and led the Cleveland Academy of Natural Science. His Lakewood home has been razed, leaving this house as the only residence still tied to him. In 1976 it was moved about a mile to a quieter lot.","period_of_significance":"1832-1837","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"The house was moved in 1976 to a new site about one mile away, with the move approved by the Keeper.
