It is faced in red brick with stone trim and a tile hip roof.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an especially fine example of twentieth-century eclectic architecture and probably the best of its kind in Lorain. Much of the city's older section was destroyed by the 1924 tornado. The house also reflects the status of a successful local business class, though its architectural design is its primary significance.","narrative":"Built in 1909 at 329 West 9th Street in Lorain, Ohio, this two-story brick mansion with stone trim was home to William Seher, a Sandusky-born businessman of German parentage. Seher served as general manager of the Lorain Brewing Company, president of the Lorain Crystal Ice Company and a director of the National Bank of Commerce. The design is generally Georgian Revival with English Baroque touches. The symmetrical north facade has a slightly projecting central bay, stone quoins, a Palladian-style window, a steep tile hip roof and a curved-pediment dormer. Its main feature is a three-bay stone arcaded gallery with Tuscan columns, and a similar porch faces east. The rear is plain, with irregular windows. The house was listed mainly for its architecture. It is considered probably the finest example of its type in Lorain, where the 1924 tornado destroyed much of the older city. At the time of listing it served partly as a residence and partly as a film processing laboratory.","period_of_significance":"1909","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian Revival with English Baroque elements; eclectic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used partly as a residence and partly as a motion picture processing laboratory at the time of nomination; interiors noted as altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.797769-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001470.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001470/0e9518f538-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001470/0e9518f538-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"N8hawk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seher_house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">N8hawk</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seher_house.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100007496","name":"Broadway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/broadway-historic-district-100007496/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989769","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138508648"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lorain-county/seher-william-house-76001470/"}
