It is also important in local history through its associations with the Kimball and Winans families.","narrative":"This two-and-a-half story frame house at 143 River Street in Madison, Ohio, shows the Eastlake style at its most elaborate. Built around an older rear section, the main block is a large square form with a bracketed frieze, drop pendants, a gable on each elevation and a full-width porch. Most of its millwork is lathe turned, with jigsawn and carved details. The porte-cochere is described as a Victorian Eastlake fantasy, and tradition holds that it may be a reworked cupola. Inside are mahogany woodwork, parquet floors, a former doctor's office and a second-floor ballroom with an orchestra podium. The older rear wing is traditionally credited to Lemuel and Abel Kimball, original settlers of Madison Township, and was moved to the site around 1868-1870. Dr. J. C. Winans lived there by 1874 and built the Eastlake portion between about 1876 and 1880. The house is regarded as the finest Eastlake example in Lake County.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian Italianate and Eastlake","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a private residence; condition marked good and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.045065-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001461.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001461/32ac1c0410-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001461/32ac1c0410-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:143_River_St.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:143_River_St.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985592","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138416666"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/winans-dr-j-c-house-76001461/"}
