It was later expanded into a U-shaped building.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as the oldest school in Indian Hill and a representative example of the early type of building used for schoolhouses at the time. It was enlarged around 1900 and again in 1926, and served as a school until the 1940s before becoming a community building.","narrative":"Built in 1851 at Indian Hill and Drake Roads, this brick schoolhouse is the oldest school in Indian Hill. It began as a one-story, one-room rectangular building with a low gabled roof, a stone foundation, common bond brickwork, six-over-six windows with simple stone sills and lintels, and a small bell tower of four columns. A stone plaque in the south gable records the school name and date. Around 1900 an ell created a two-room school, with the first four grades in the Little Room and the last four in the Big Room. A further addition in 1926 doubled the size and produced the present U-shaped plan. The early schools of the area were named Washington, Jefferson and Franklin. The building outgrew its use as a school in the 1940s and has since served as the Armstrong Community Building. Apart from regular window placement and the bell tower, it has little decorative detail. The builder is unknown.","period_of_significance":"1851","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Form lists status as unoccupied/vacant, though the text says it has been used as the Armstrong Community Building since the 1940s.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.690237-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001450.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001450/cc1c87125f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001450/cc1c87125f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JeffersonSchool2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JeffersonSchool2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989071","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6175580"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/jefferson-schoolhouse-76001450/"}
