The main block is 40 feet square with a stone foundation, a truncated hip roof of gray slate, a bracketed cornice and a belvedere reached by a spiral staircase. A paneled front door with transom and sidelights opens onto a small porch with square wood columns. Behind the house, a wing holds a summer kitchen and smokehouse, and a carriage house is linked to it by a short breezeway. A bank barn northeast of the house has hand-hewn beams joined with pegs. Inside, the original walnut paneling and woodwork survive, and the house has seven fireplaces. The complex is regarded as an excellent example of early farm architecture in the county, with fine detailing that reflects the wealth of the family who built it. The original owners kept it until the late 1890s.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1855","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italian Villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as very well preserved, with few interior changes apart from modern plumbing and lighting; the form lists the property as a private residence.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.068614-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001420.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001420/17a0e4dde8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001420/17a0e4dde8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Tristan Blatt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lyman_Allen_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tristan Blatt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lyman_Allen_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988217","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyman_Allen_House_and_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716648"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/fairfield-county/allen-lyman-house-and-barn-76001420/"}
