It is the second oldest building in Hicksville and the only one remaining there associated with Alfred P. Edgerton, a land company representative and political figure who funded it as a private chapel.","narrative":"This small, one-story church on High Street in Hicksville, Ohio, was completed in 1873 in the Gothic Revival style. Its walls are sheathed in original vertical boards with chamfered battens, and a projecting entrance with a steep gable shelters Gothic-arched double doors. Diamond-paned leaded casement windows with label moldings line the sides, and three stained-glass windows imported from England light the chancel. Inside, the plastered walls rise above ash wainscoting, an ash open-beam roof spans the nave, and the original brass coal oil chandelier, altar, organ and baptismal font remain. Alfred P. Edgerton, a land company representative who later served in the Ohio Senate and in Congress, paid more than $7,000 toward construction and used the building as his private chapel until he left in 1875, when he gave it to the Diocese of Ohio. It is the second oldest building in Hicksville and the only one still tied to him.","period_of_significance":"1873","architect_builder":"Alfred Edgerton (builder)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a religious building; described as altered but largely unaltered in its original fabric, owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:08.935179-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001414.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001414/6101a429ff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001414/6101a429ff-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_in_Hicksville,_angle.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_in_Hicksville,_angle.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988006","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Hicksville,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591110"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/defiance-county/st-pauls-episcopal-church-76001414/"}
