The complex is owned by the county.","why_significant":"The courthouse is described as one of the striking county capitols of the midwest, with monumental proportions that gave weight and dignity to nineteenth century county government. The Sheriff's House and Jail is an unusually imposing High Victorian example of the old practice of housing the sheriff next to or connected with the jail.","narrative":"Rising above Greenville at 4th and Broadway, the Darke County Courthouse was built between 1870 and 1874 by the Dayton contractor Rouzer and Rouzer. Its smooth ashlar walls, Corinthian pilasters, bracketed cornice and central clock tower topped by a statue of Justice give it an eclectic look that recalls Renaissance Revival and Second Empire design. Beside it stands the Sheriff's House and Jail, a High Victorian brick building with rusticated quoins, contracted in 1869 and built by Jonathan Kenney of Dayton. Two roughly square blocks are joined by a narrow hall, with the jail at a smaller scale. The pairing reflects the once common practice of giving the county sheriff a home attached to the jail. The complex was recognized for its architecture and for the dignity it lent to county government. A later porch altered the Sheriff's House, and the original cupola over the bell was removed and kept in storage for possible restoration.","period_of_significance":"1870-1874","architect_builder":"Rouzer and Rouzer (Dayton contractor) for the courthouse; Jonathan Kenney of Dayton for the Sheriff's House and Jail","architectural_style":"Eclectic, reminiscent of Renaissance Revival and Second Empire (courthouse); High Victorian in a Renaissance Revival mode (Sheriff's House and Jail)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in government use, in good condition; the clock tower cupola has been removed and a later mansard porch was added to the Sheriff's House.
