It was designed by John Root of the Chicago firm Burnham and Root for a savings bank founded in 1849 that had occupied the site since the 1880s and needed larger banking and office space. The square, roughly 100-foot plan has round turrets at its corners, a ground-floor arcade, and a main entrance set in a large cast iron arch. Its walls are load-bearing stone, and it may be the only large stone building in Cleveland built that way. The design shows the influence of H. H. Richardson's Marshall Field Warehouse and blends Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance revival elements. Inside, English artist Walter Crane designed the decorative scheme, including murals, marble columns with gold Corinthian capitals and stained glass ceiling panels. Considered one of Cleveland's first skyscrapers, it remains among the city's most significant 19th-century commercial buildings, and one of Root's last works.","period_of_significance":"1890","architect_builder":"Burnham & Root, John Root","architectural_style":"Commercial Style with Richardsonian Romanesque elements; combines Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in commercial use; the interior is well preserved and little altered, though the original skylight over the central open well has been altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.065697-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001401.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001401/56692c4ea7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001401/56692c4ea7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Eli Pousson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Society_Bldg.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eli Pousson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Society_Bldg.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"02000702","name":"Euclid Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/euclid-avenue-historic-district-02000702/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987393","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_for_Savings_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7552239"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/society-for-savings-building-76001401/"}
