Badgley.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an important early institutional church designed specifically for social and community work, with about two-thirds of the original structure given to educational, social and community uses. Its Romanesque exterior and sanctuary are described as excellent examples of architecture and architectural space. It was also described at the time as \"an epoch-making church building\" and was the first building on Cleveland's west side to use electricity.","narrative":"Pilgrim Congregational Church is a large Richardsonian Romanesque church at 2592 West 14th Street in Cleveland, begun in 1893 and dedicated in 1894. Architect Sidney R. Badgley designed it, Jacob Schade was the contractor, and Elizabeth Parsons designed the leaded glass dome over the sanctuary. It has rose windows, a roughly 150-foot tower, and a large arched east entrance. Its significance lies in its purpose: about two-thirds of the building was devoted to education, recreation and community work, including a gymnasium, library, reading room, dining and social rooms, and a large Sunday school room. Contemporaries called it an epoch-making church building, and an exhibit about it was sent to the 1899 Paris Exposition. It was the first building on Cleveland's west side to use electricity. The church reports early local work in visiting nursing and community fund campaigns. A Community House was added in 1920, and much of the original interior and mechanical equipment survives.","period_of_significance":"1893-1894","architect_builder":"Architect Sidney R.
