It is also an excellent example of eclectic Italian Baroque design, unusual because it is built of brick rather than stone.","narrative":"Holy Rosary Church, on Mayfield Road in Cleveland's Little Italy, is a large brick church designed in an eclectic Italian Baroque manner. Its facade is divided into three bays by six square piers, with round-arched openings, a statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in the central gable niche, and statues of the four Evangelists on the center piers. A square southeast tower rises to an octagonal open belfry topped by a copper-covered cupola. The brickwork is the most striking feature, translating forms first developed in stone and suggesting northern European building more than Mediterranean. The parish was formed in 1892, after a mission from the Scalabrini Fathers of East Cleveland, and was the city's first Italian parish. Many residents worked as stonecutters for monument works near Lakeview Cemetery. The present church was begun in 1905 under Father Anthony Gibelli and dedicated in November 1909. It was listed for its architecture and its place in the city's immigrant ethnic history.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Eclectic Italian Baroque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a church; the interior has been renovated and redecorated in a modern manner, and the front stairs have been altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.234768-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001397.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001397/38cce853dd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001397/38cce853dd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Sailko","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cleveland,_chiesa_del_santo_rosario,_a_little_italy.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sailko</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cleveland,_chiesa_del_santo_rosario,_a_little_italy.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"12000897","name":"Euclid Heights Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/euclid-heights-historic-district-12000897/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987759","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Rosary_Church_(Cleveland)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716457"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/holy-rosary-church-76001397/"}
