They keep largely unaltered interiors and formal gardens, and have been preserved through adaptive use as museum buildings.","narrative":"Two large mansions on East Boulevard in Cleveland, linked by a museum wing, make up this property. The east house, built in 1908 to designs by Abram Garfield for Mrs. John Hay, is a stuccoed masonry building with arched windows, iron balconies, a tile hipped roof and an Italian-style garden. Its entrance hall holds a carved walnut staircase made for an 1875 Euclid Avenue residence. The west house, a limestone mansion designed by the New York firm Walker and Gillette for Harry Payne Bingham in 1918, has a two-story hall, painted wooden ceilings and a formal garden with a fountain. Later occupants included steel manufacturer Price McKinney and the Hanna family. The Western Reserve Historical Society acquired the houses in 1938 and 1940 and joined them with a wing in 1959; an automobile museum addition followed in 1965. The houses were listed for their architecture, their family associations and their well-preserved interiors and gardens.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Abram Garfield (Hay-McKinney House); Walker and Gillette (Bingham-Hanna House)","architectural_style":"Second Renaissance Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a museum and library of the Western Reserve Historical Society; condition rated excellent, with gardens maintained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.493287-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001395.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001395/a1ff030617-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001395/a1ff030617-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hay-McKinney_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hay-McKinney_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987731","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60395148"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/hay-mckinney-and-bingham-hanna-house-76001395/"}
