It was probably built around 1830.","why_significant":"The house is of local architectural significance. Early brick farmhouses are scarce in the Crawford County area, where buildings of the 1830-40 period were mostly frame. Of two brick houses of that era found near Crestline, it is the only one in the Greek Revival style.","narrative":"Near Crestline in Crawford County, Ohio, this two-story brick farmhouse sits on the south side of Oldfield Road. It is thought to date from about 1830, though the exact year is unknown. The rectangular main block rests on a coursed rubble foundation, with common-bond brick walls, three bays on each side, and original six-over-six windows with stone sills and brick flat arches. A story-and-a-half brick wing extends to the south and appears to have been built at the same time. The house has the form and proportions of Greek Revival design but lacks its decorative detail. Its importance is local. In this part of Ohio, buildings from the 1830s and 1840s were mostly frame, and a survey of rural areas around Crestline and Galion found only two brick houses from that period. Only this one is Greek Revival in style, which makes it unusual for its area. The nearby barns and outbuildings were judged not significant.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1830","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (simple, unadorned; described as vernacular Greek Revival on the data sheet)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and altered; the form lists it as occupied and in use as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.143089-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001385.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001385/0b15eee663-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001385/0b15eee663-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heckler_Farmhouse_from_east.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heckler_Farmhouse_from_east.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987293","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137631737"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/crawford-county/heckler-farmhouse-76001385/"}
