It also played a role in the development of College Corner and is described as having continuously served as a hotel and inn since 1832.","narrative":"Built in 1832 by Gideon Howe, this two-and-a-half story brick tavern and inn sits on State Route 27 in College Corner, Ohio, on a small triangular lot beside the Indiana state line. The oldest section is rectangular with a stone foundation, a steep gabled roof with overhanging eaves, and two identical simple entrances. Later wings, a frame addition from about 1960 and an enclosed rear porch changed its shape over time. Howe bought the land from Miami University and located the tavern on the road between Hamilton, Ohio, and Richmond, Indiana. He opened the hotel in 1833 and by 1837 had drawn enough settlers to lay out the village of College Corner. Later owners included Joseph Beck, merchant Samuel Ridenour and Moritz Schlenck, whose family kept it until 1930. It was listed as the first permanent building in the area, an example of early tavern architecture, and a hotel and inn in continuous use since construction.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Gideon Howe","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied at the time of nomination and described as in process of restoration as an antique shop; a data sheet also lists its current function as hotel and inn.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.791388-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001376.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001376/0724b319df-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001376/0724b319df-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Andrew Clyde Armstrong","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howe_Tavern.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Clyde Armstrong</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howe_Tavern.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986955","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howe_Tavern_(College_Corner,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716464"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/butler-county/howe-tavern-76001376/"}
