Its plain exterior contrasts with unusually elaborate and inventive Adamesque interior woodwork, including a carved blind-arch stair fascia described as apparently unique in the state.","narrative":"Shady Oaks is a frame plantation house on a seven-acre site near Warrenton, Warren County, North Carolina. Built in the early nineteenth century, it follows the tripartite plan common in northeastern North Carolina: a narrow two-story central block with its gable end to the front, flanked by two-bay wings. Outside it is simple, with beaded weatherboards, a stone foundation and heavy stone end chimneys. Inside, the stair hall and rear parlor are strikingly ornate. A three-flight stair carries a carved blind arch with a demi-sunburst, and the parlor mantel shows gouged and carved urns, vines and sunbursts in the Adamesque manner. These interiors place the house among a small group of Federal houses in Warren and Halifax counties reflecting Virginia influence. The property is tied to Robert Tines Cheek, a landowner, county justice and tavern owner, and later passed to his son William Alston Cheek and then to the Twitty family.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Federal; tripartite Federal style with Adamesque interior woodwork","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and altered, occupied by tenants, with one-story frame additions to the south and rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.113326-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/7227/47722702/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/76001346.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722702","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shady_Oaks","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25247627"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/warren-county/shady-oaks-76001346/"}
