It contains buildings from about 1790 to the early twentieth century.","why_significant":"Rockford was founded in 1790 as the Surry County seat and held that role until 1851. Its few surviving buildings form a compact district showing the town's growth periods, from the earliest taverns, hotel and Masonic lodge, through the Greek Revival courthouse, to the railroad-era buildings after 1890. Little development has occurred since the early railroad period.","narrative":"Rockford is a small, semi-deserted town on the north bank of the Yadkin River that was laid out in 1790 as the seat of Surry County. The historic district follows half a mile of High Street from the railroad track up to the Methodist Church. Surviving buildings include the York Tavern, the Masonic Lodge, the remains of the Grant-Burrus Hotel, a Greek Revival brick courthouse of 1830 that burned in 1925 and was later rebuilt as a residence, and a group of stores and railroad-related structures. The county seat moved to Dobson in the 1850s, and the town declined. The Southern Railway branch completed in 1890 brought new trade, hotels and warehouses, and much of the remaining building stock dates from that period. Because little has been built since the early twentieth century, the street preserves a readable record of the town's early political life and later railroad-era commerce.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and late nineteenth-century vernacular frame buildings","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked fair and deteriorated, with the buildings mostly unoccupied. The Grant-Burrus Hotel was largely burned in 1974 during restoration, and only a handful of families live in the town.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.293753-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/7223/47722318/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/76001338.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001338/d68e371ba2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001338/d68e371ba2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"G Keith Hall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rockford_General_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">G Keith Hall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rockford_General_Store.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722318","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockford_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22061066"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/surry-county/rockford-historic-district-76001338/"}
