It was built around 1824, probably by William Joseph Wilson.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the house as a substantial example of the simplicity and good craftsmanship of the major brick houses of the Catawba River Valley in its period. It is also tied to William J. Wilson, a Lincoln County register of deeds, justice of the peace and gold mine proprietor. In 1827 he hosted state geologist Elisha Mitchell, whose diary describes the house and a supper in its basement dining room.","narrative":"Built around 1824 on land then in Lincoln County, this two-story brick house near Gastonia is a Federal style dwelling with a stone foundation, Flemish bond brickwork, molded brick cornices, and paired end chimneys. A full basement once held the kitchen and dining room. Late nineteenth century changes added porches, a porte cochere, and decorative eave trim. Inside, a center hall plan holds Georgian-Federal mantels, wainscot, and moldings. The house was built for William Joseph Wilson, who served as Lincoln County register of deeds, acted as a justice of the peace known as Judge Wilson, and held a share in a local gold mining company. In 1827 state geologist Elisha Mitchell visited and recorded in his diary the large brick house and a supper taken in the underground room. The house is valued as a well crafted example of the region's early brick architecture and for its link to Wilson. It passed from his son Lawson to later owners after a public auction in 1890.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, with later Victorian era elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition and altered, and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.078687-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7203/47720397/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/76001324.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001324/a3b007f1f0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001324/a3b007f1f0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Upstateherd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_J._Wilson_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstateherd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_J._Wilson_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720397","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._Wilson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24436226"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/gaston-county/wilson-william-j-house-76001324/"}
