It keeps much of its Georgian interior fabric alongside Greek Revival remodeling. It was probably built for Levi Creecy and later belonged to Edward Wood, a successful planter and businessman who owned several notable plantations.","narrative":"Greenfield Plantation is a two-story brick house near Somer in Chowan County, about 14 miles east of Edenton. Believed to date from around 1752, it follows a T-shaped plan, with a five-bay front block and a rear ell added in the mid-nineteenth century. A gable roof extends over a full-width double porch, a form typical of coastal North Carolina houses. Inside, the central hall keeps its Georgian paneling and a three-flight stair, while the flanking parlors show Greek Revival remodeling from about 1840. The property was probably built for Levi Creecy and stayed in his family until 1851. Lemuel Creecy later gave it the name Greenfield; before that it was known for over a century as Fordice's, after the original grantee. Edward Wood, a Creecy descendant and a planter, fisheries operator and steamship company organizer, bought it in 1851 and added it to his holdings. His family still owned it when the property was recorded in 1975.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799, 1800-1899 (specific dates ca. 1752, ca. 1840)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian with Greek Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as well preserved and in good condition, altered, on its original site; used as a private residence and occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.528579-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7195/47719599/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/76001316.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719599","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenfield_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18346118"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chowan-county/greenfield-plantation-76001316/"}
