The earlier Federal-style block dates to about 1820, and a rear ell was added about 1870-75.","why_significant":"The house belonged to two of Ashe County's most prominent nineteenth-century citizens: George Bower, a state senator and businessman who built the original section, and Dr. Aras B. Cox, a physician and community leader who wrote a local history. The house also shows additions and alterations made by successive owners.","narrative":"Near Scottville in Ashe County, North Carolina, this two-story frame house with weatherboard siding grew in two stages. The south block, built about 1820 in the Federal style, was the work of George Bower, who served as county constable and as a state senator from 1812 to 1817 and ran a large farm. He also built a brick house in Jefferson. In 1852 he sold the property to Dr. Aras B. Cox, a local physician, court clerk and Confederate company commander. Cox helped found the Sutherland Methodist Church and wrote a history of the area's settlement. After the Civil War, about 1870-75, a rear wing was added, creating a T-shaped plan with a two-story porch on the west side. Porches were rebuilt about 1930. Features include a Flemish bond brick chimney, six-over-six and nine-over-nine sash windows, and interior mantels from different periods. The house is noted for its association with two prominent county figures and for its layered architecture.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1820","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal period, with Federal and Greek Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition, with alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.622856-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/7189/47718969/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/76001303.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001303/c3032a7bed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001303/c3032a7bed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"rossograph","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bowers-Cox_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rossograph</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bowers-Cox_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718969","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bower-Cox_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17511251"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/ashe-county/bower-cox-house-76001303/"}
