Pierce and enlarged in about 1881 and 1892.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the house as an example of a family farm that expanded and diversified over several generations. The house grew from a one-room log dwelling into a two-story L-plan farmhouse. The 1880 census shows the Pierce farm as prosperous, and a group of farm outbuildings remains.","narrative":"Near Crumpler in Ashe County, this farmhouse began as a small log house built about 1871 by John M. Pierce on land belonging to his father, Rufus Kincaid Pierce, who had settled in the New River valley in 1845. Pierce added a one-story frame ell about 1881. In 1892 he raised the log section to two full stories, added a two-bay west wing and built a two-story porch across the five-bay front, giving the house its present L plan with weatherboard siding and brick chimneys. The interior keeps a center-hall plan and simple rural woodwork. The 1880 census shows a prosperous farm of one hundred acres with livestock, grain crops, an orchard and dairy products. Surviving outbuildings include a meathouse, springhouse, a log double-pen barn from about 1883, and later barns and a chicken house. The property was listed as an example of a family homestead that grew and diversified over generations.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"John M.
