William Weaver built the first house about 1848, and it was enlarged about 1890 and about 1895.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the property as an important example of continued one-family ownership of a farmstead in the New River Valley, with three generations of Weavers holding it over 130 years. Later additions respected the earlier building fabric, and the outbuildings date from each generation of ownership.","narrative":"Set along the east bank of the South Fork of the New River near Piney Creek, this Alleghany County farmhouse grew in three stages. William Weaver, who bought the land in 1845, built the first house about 1848 as an L-plan frame building with a two-story main block, a one-story ell and a stone foundation. His son Andrew added a kitchen and pantry about 1890, and about 1895 the ell was raised to two stories and a two-story front porch was added, with scrolled brackets, lyre-shaped posts and a patterned balustrade. Inside, the original mantel keeps its stained and grained finish, and the front windows carry frosted grape-cluster stencils. Log and frame outbuildings from about 1850 to 1940 and a family cemetery remain on the farm. The property is noted for three generations of Weaver ownership spanning 130 years, with each round of additions respecting earlier work.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"William Weaver (builder of the original house, ca. 1848); Andrew Weaver (ca. 1890 kitchen and pantry addition)","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition, altered; the owner lives in the family homestead and the family cemetery is well maintained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.603985-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/7189/47718908/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/76001297.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001297/5b04840d8d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001297/5b04840d8d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Bonita Loggins","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DSC_4994-Edit.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bonita Loggins</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DSC_4994-Edit.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718908","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Weaver_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17560646"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/alleghany-county/weaver-william-house-76001297/"}
