Its foundation dates to the third quarter of the 18th century, and it was later enlarged and altered.","why_significant":"Built as a modest farmhouse on Phillipsburg Manor land and used as a tavern from the late 1700s, it became a landmark on the busy Albany Post Road. Despite later alterations, it is believed to be the oldest surviving structure in Ossining's riverfront area. The nomination is for exploration/settlement.","narrative":"Standing at the gateway to the Sparta neighborhood of Ossining, this two-and-a-half-story frame and stone building began in the third quarter of the 18th century as a farmhouse leased from Frederick Phillipse of Phillipsburg Manor by Peter Davids, whose Huguenot father settled in the area by 1698. In 1795 his son David obtained a liquor license for the address, the first known record of its use as a tavern. By 1820 it was called the Garrison House, and in the following decades it served again as a tavern and landmark on the Old Albany Post Road. During that period the structure was doubled in size and a veranda was added. Later alterations, including additional balloon framing, produced its present clapboard appearance. Although much changed, it is believed to be the oldest surviving structure in Ossining's riverfront area and the last remaining building from 18th and 19th century Sparta. The town intends to restore it as a museum and meeting room.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799, 1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and in fair condition, altered, on its original site.
