It has long been revered as one of George Washington's headquarters during the Battle of White Plains in October 1776. It also typifies the frame, one-and-a-half-story houses once common in the lower Hudson Valley.","narrative":"Set on a one-acre site near the Bronx River in North White Plains, this farmhouse was built in two stages, the first in 1738 and the second in 1770. It is a six-bay, gable-ended, clapboarded frame house of one and a half stories, with a full-width front porch under the sloping roof and a large root cellar dug into the hillside nearby. The earliest part stands on land the Miller family acquired in the 1680s, and the 1770 addition was made by Elijah Miller. During the Battle of White Plains in October 1776, Ann Miller offered the house to General Washington, and the surrounding hill was the site of the retrenchment he ordered. An unusual surviving feature is the scalloped, unpainted wood-shingled wall of the 1738 section, left intact when the western addition was attached. Westchester County and the Daughters of the American Revolution purchased and restored the house in 1917, and it has been a museum since then. It is one of few eighteenth-century buildings left in lower Westchester.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by Westchester County and operated as a historic house museum, open to the public ten months of the year; condition not rated on the form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.385024-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/76001292.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001292/8bcbc1919c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001292/8bcbc1919c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"NortyNort (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elijahmillerhouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">NortyNort (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elijahmillerhouse.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90002143","name":"Bronx River Parkway Reservation","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/bronx-river-parkway-reservation-90002143/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323109","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Miller_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5360958"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/miller-house-76001292/"}
