It contains twenty-seven principal historic buildings and their outbuildings, built mainly between the early 1700s and the late 1800s.","why_significant":"The district holds an important concentration of rural vernacular domestic architecture showing Long Island's development from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. It is valued for visual homogeneity, few modern intrusions, and continued traditional residential use, often by descendants of early families. It also preserves the agrarian setting of an early farming community.","narrative":"Miller Place is a farming hamlet on Long Island's north shore, and its historic district runs about seven-tenths of a mile along North Country Road. Twenty-seven principal wood-frame buildings, with barns, carriage houses and other outbuildings, survive from a community settled in the seventeenth century. Five date at least partly from before 1800 and eighteen more from before 1850. Examples include the William Miller House, begun about 1720 with a Georgian pedimented entry, the Federal-style Miller Place Academy of about 1834, and the Greek Revival Reverend Ezra King House of about 1840. The hamlet prospered after the War of 1812, shipping farm produce from Mount Sinai Harbor and later supplying cordwood to New York City. Its houses are consistent in scale and integrity, many remain in family hands, and surrounding open fields and a pond preserve the rural setting. This combination made it a rare surviving example of older Long Island village life.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates given as mid-eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century)","architect_builder":"Various","architectural_style":"Long Island rural vernacular, with Georgian, Federal and Greek Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Most principal buildings were built as dwellings and are still used as homes; the form lists the district as occupied, privately owned and in good condition, with some modern intrusions at its ends.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.119976-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/76001281.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001281/017c7af25d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001281/017c7af25d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Iracaz at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mpmcnultys.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Iracaz at English Wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mpmcnultys.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322178","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller_Place_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6859221"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/miller-place-historic-district-76001281/"}
