Herman Gansevoort, who built it, also created the village of Gansevoort and managed the family mills that drove settlement in this part of Saratoga County.","narrative":"Gansevoort Mansion is a two-story wood-frame house in the hamlet of Gansevoort, Saratoga County, built in 1813 by Herman Gansevoort for his bride. It has a gabled roof, a central entrance, five bays across the front and a shed-roofed veranda with fluted Doric columns. The house was raised about four feet in 1835, and much of its visible detail dates from a Greek Revival renovation of that period. Herman managed the family's lumber and grist mills on the Snock Kill and laid out the village of Gansevoort, selling lots and giving land for churches. The property is tied to the Gansevoorts, a Dutch family active in Albany and the upper Hudson Valley from the mid-17th century. His sister Maria Melville later lived here with her daughters, and her son Herman Melville visited. The family sold the house in 1885, and a Masonic lodge now owns and uses it, meeting in the first-floor room.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Herman Gansevoort (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (1835 renovation of an 1813 house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; used as a Masonic lodge meeting place, with the form listing condition as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.591348-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/76001272.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001272/5b3c6c6b96-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001272/5b3c6c6b96-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gansevoort_Mansion_Nov_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gansevoort_Mansion_Nov_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321578","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gansevoort_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5521494"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/saratoga-county/gansevoort-mansion-76001272/"}
