It now stands in Fred Sehr Park, off Berwick Road.","why_significant":"The house was the main farmhouse of the extensive landholdings of the Alvord family, early salt manufacturers and merchants in Salina. It is one of the few surviving links to the early nineteenth century in a heavily developed suburban township. It also records the Alvord family's prosperity and the later farm life of the Brewster family.","narrative":"Fred Sehr Park in Salina, northeast of Syracuse, centers on a fieldstone farmhouse built around 1835. The two and a half story building has a gable roof, brick lintels, a simple wood cornice, two end chimneys and a five-bay front, with a bake oven projecting from the kitchen side. It was the main house of lands held by the Alvord family, whose members, Dioclesian and Elisha, were pioneer salt manufacturers and merchants in Salina. Dioclesian probably lived in a frame house on the plank road instead. An 1855 advertisement listed the farm's outbuildings, including two barns and a cider mill, and the sites of these remain as archeological traces. Later owners included the Brewster family, whose son Arthur wrote memoirs about growing up on the farm, and the Onondaga Pottery Company, which rented the house to employees for about forty years. Sold to the town in 1972, it is among the few reminders of Salina's early nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":"c. 1835","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Unoccupied and owned by the Town of Salina; windows are boarded up and the house is proposed for rehabilitation in a later phase of park development.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.874814-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/76001257.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001257/2e76d2d409-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001257/2e76d2d409-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Crazyale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alvord_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Crazyale</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alvord_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320291","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvord_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4738337"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/alvord-house-76001257/"}
