It is considered one of Richard Upjohn's masterpieces and secured his national reputation. The graveyard holds the graves of historical figures such as Alexander Hamilton and Robert Fulton.","narrative":"Trinity Church sits at the head of Wall Street in lower Manhattan, together with the oldest burial ground in the area. The present building, finished in 1846, is the third church of an Episcopal parish founded in 1697. The first burned in the Great Fire of 1776, and the second was torn down in 1839 after heavy snows weakened it. Architect Richard Upjohn designed the replacement in brownstone, drawing on A.W. Pugin's Perpendicular Gothic design for an ideal church. Its octagonal spire was once the tallest structure on the New York skyline, and its bronze doors are the work of noted American sculptors. The church is regarded as an early landmark of the Gothic Revival in America and one of Upjohn's finest works. The churchyard contains the graves of Alexander Hamilton, Robert Fulton, Albert Gallatin and Francis Lewis, the only Declaration of Independence signer buried in Manhattan. George Washington is recorded as having worshiped there.","period_of_significance":"1846","architect_builder":"Richard Upjohn (1802-1878)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival (Perpendicular Gothic; a free rendering of English Gothic)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.919875-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/76001252_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001252/e66f7acc4f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001252/e66f7acc4f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Gryffindor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trinity_Church_NYC_004b.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gryffindor</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trinity_Church_NYC_004b.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07000063","name":"Wall Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/wall-street-historic-district-07000063/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315884","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_Church_(Manhattan)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q866896"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/trinity-church-and-graveyard-76001252/"}
