It reflects the city's nineteenth-century fire-alarm system, used before street-corner alarm boxes were introduced in 1871. Reviewers also tied it to Bogardus, a leading inventor of cast-iron building methods.","narrative":"Standing on an outcrop of Manhattan schist in Marcus Garvey Park, formerly Mount Morris Park, this octagonal cast-iron tower was built about 1856 to watch for fires in Harlem. James Bogardus designed it, and engineer Julius Kroehl built it. Eight slender fluted columns rise in tiers joined by octagonal lintels, topped by a smaller open lantern. A large alarm bell hangs near the top, and a spiral stair curves upward. The tower sits on a stone base added by the Works Progress Administration in 1930. It was the third of three iron towers that followed Bogardus's first, at Ninth Avenue and West 33rd Street. When it was built, the hill was rural. Fire watch towers lost their role after street fire alarm boxes arrived in 1871 and were discontinued after 1878. It is the only one left in New York City, and its design clearly expresses its function. It remains a reminder of nineteenth-century municipal communications and early cast-iron construction.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1856)","architect_builder":"James Bogardus, designer; Julius Kroehl, builder","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked deteriorated but unaltered and on its original site; it no longer serves a practical function and stands isolated in the park.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.782021-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/76001240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001240/c99d0904a7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001240/c99d0904a7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harlem-firetower.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harlem-firetower.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100011764","name":"Marcus Garvey Park","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/marcus-garvey-park-100011764/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319578","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem_Fire_Watchtower","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5658536"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/harlem-fire-watchtower-76001240/"}
