It is described as one of the finest eclectic industrial structures built in Franklin County in the nineteenth century. As a warehouse and railroad office, it supported Malone's economic growth and survives from the railroad boom era.","narrative":"Built about 1852 for the Northern Railroad, this freight depot at 99 Railroad Street in Malone is a long, one-story building measuring roughly forty by one hundred twenty feet. Its walls are faced with smooth coursed sandstone from a local quarry, and it has a low gable roof, a dentiled stone cornice, and door and window openings set in rusticated stone arches. The east end originally held the railroad freight office. The railroad reached Malone in 1850, and the depot was built to store and ship bulk goods from Franklin County to eastern markets. It was part of a complex that included car shops and a turntable. The depot is regarded as one of the finest examples of eclectic industrial architecture in the county and as a surviving piece of the 1850s railroad boom. It was sold to a private owner in 1965 and is now leased to a commercial tenant. Interior changes were made in the early 1960s.","period_of_significance":"1850-1965","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate, with Romanesque Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; privately owned and leased to a wholesale beverage distributor.
