It has hosted receptions for seven U.S. Presidents and was the setting for events in state politics, including Governor Altgeld's Haymarket pardon message and Governor Horner's coal-union mediation.","narrative":"Home to Illinois governors since 1855, the Executive Mansion stands on a block bounded by Jackson, Fourth, Edwards and Fifth streets in Springfield. John Murray Van Osdel designed the original three-story brick house in the Italianate style, with a Corinthian-columned portico and a Greek Revival interior. The legislature appropriated $15,000 in 1853, and Governor Joel Matteson moved in on November 30, 1855. The building was enlarged and restyled in 1886 and 1898-1900, then rehabilitated and expanded in 1971-1972 into an H-shaped plan. The original masonry and much of the interior framing remain. It is listed as the only governor's residence Illinois built specifically for the first family. Seven U.S. Presidents were received there. Governor Altgeld wrote his Haymarket pardon message in the house in 1893, Governor Horner convened coal-union talks there in 1933, and Adlai Stevenson prepared his 1952 concession speech there. Governor Bissell was inaugurated and died in the house.","period_of_significance":"1855-present","architect_builder":"John M.
