Action to found Monmouth College was initiated here in 1852. The 1854 building is also cited as a fine example of vernacular architecture and craftsmanship.","narrative":"South Henderson Church and Cemetery is a rural complex in Henderson County, Illinois, made up of a limestone church and a burial ground across an unimproved road. The rectangular building, 45 by 70 feet, was begun in 1854 and first used for services in July 1855, free of debt. Members of the congregation hauled the local limestone from a nearby creek. Its two front doorways recall the custom of seating men and women separately. The congregation formed in 1835 under settlers from Indiana led by David Finley, meeting first in a barn and then in a wood church built in 1837. In 1852 the Reverend Robert Ross and a fellow minister proposed an academy at Monmouth, which became Monmouth College. The cemetery holds Revolutionary War soldiers and veterans of later nineteenth-century wars. The congregation disbanded in 1954, and a cemetery association cares for the grounds.","period_of_significance":"1835-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular religious architecture, with Greek Revival elements noted on the review sheet","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and well cared for, with expenses covered by a bequest; the congregation disbanded in 1954.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.80158-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/8929/28892964/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/76000709.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000709/856e818446-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000709/856e818446-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Henderson_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Henderson_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892964","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Henderson_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900375"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/henderson-county/south-henderson-church-and-cemetery-76000709/"}
