Most of it was built between about 1869 and 1904.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Sheffield is one of Chicago's late nineteenth century neighborhoods that has kept its middle class urban character in relatively unspoiled condition. Residential blocks are interlaced with well-defined shopping streets, and the architecture is well designed, consistent in scale, materials and texture, but not spectacular. Growth was shaped by nearby industry, McCormick Theological Seminary, St. Vincent de Paul and improved transit.","narrative":"Sheffield is a roughly 530-acre neighborhood on Chicago's North Side, in the western part of Lincoln Park. Land once farmed by Joseph and Maria Sheffield filled with housing after about 1868, drawing German immigrants who worked at factories along the Chicago River and families attracted by McCormick Theological Seminary and St. Vincent de Paul parish. Horsecar, cable car and elevated lines added to its appeal. By about 1905, 60 to 70 percent of today's buildings were standing. Italianate wooden cottages, Queen Anne and Romanesque masonry houses, row houses, flats and polychromatic shop buildings line narrow, tree-edged streets, with commercial corridors on Lincoln, Halsted, Armitage and Fullerton. The district was listed because it keeps a consistent scale, materials and street pattern from its original middle class urban era. It declined from the 1920s through the 1950s without major losses, then recovered through rehabilitation from the 1960s onward.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Egan and Prindeville (St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1895); Adler and Sullivan (commercial building at 2310-12 Lincoln, 1883); Barfield (row houses on Bissell, 1895)","architectural_style":"Italianate cottages, urban Queen Anne, Romanesque, and some French style row houses","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good and the district is occupied. It is mainly residential with commercial streets, institutions and some older manufacturing buildings. Many buildings have been rehabilitated since 1960, and a few large postwar buildings are noted as intrusions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.177688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/8923/28892336/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/76000704.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000704/c4261b7f1f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000704/c4261b7f1f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Alanscottwalker","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sheffield_Historic_District.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Alanscottwalker</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sheffield_Historic_District.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83000313","name":"Sheffield Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/illinois/sheffield-historic-district-boundary-increase-83000313/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892336","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85800754"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/sheffield-historic-district-76000704/"}
