George Cabaniss built it around 1805.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding example of early rural Georgia architecture, noted for elaborately carved mantelpieces, cornices, doors and paneled wainscoting. Its c. 1805 date is notable because the land was ceded by the Creek Indians only in 1802. It is also one of two houses of outstanding architectural detail built by the Cabaniss family in the area.","narrative":"Built around 1805 by George Cabaniss, who migrated to Georgia from Virginia, this weatherboarded house sits on a brick foundation about three miles northeast of Bradley in Jones County. It has a two-story center section flanked by side wings with half-stories above. Inside, every room except one half-story has a fireplace, and the mantelpieces are elaborately carved. Paneled wainscoting, cornice details, and a nearly five-foot-wide front door add to its character, while a band of star-shaped metopes and triglyphs decorates the exterior below the cornice. The house matters as an example of early rural Georgia architecture, built on land the Creek had ceded only in 1802. It is one of two finely detailed houses built by the Cabaniss family locally. Two family cemeteries and an old well remain on the grounds. The house had been unoccupied for years and vandalized, though restoration was planned.","period_of_significance":"c.1805","architect_builder":"George Cabaniss (builder and original owner)","architectural_style":"Vernacular with elements of Jeffersonian Classicism","criteria":[],"status_note":"Unoccupied for a number of years and vandalized several times; the property is overgrown, and the owners planned restoration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.430167-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/76000639.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000639/e61fd38c34-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000639/e61fd38c34-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cabaniss-Hanberry_House,_Jones_County,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cabaniss-Hanberry_House,_Jones_County,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208747","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabaniss-Hanberry_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29093922"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/jones-county/cabaniss-hanberry-house-76000639/"}
