It includes a two-story house probably built in the 1850s, early twentieth-century dairy outbuildings, and remnants of rice fields.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the property was a center of rice cultivation in coastal Georgia's rice society of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its history shows the development and decline of the rice industry over more than a century. It can also help illustrate the way of life on rice plantations.","narrative":"Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation occupies about 1,268 acres of marsh and pine upland along the Altamaha River in Glynn County, Georgia. Much of it was once rice fields, now visible only as faint outlines, embankments and traces of water ducts. The main house, built low to the ground and probably in the 1850s, has a central hall, a four-room ground-floor plan, federal-style details such as a fanlight, and a marble mantelpiece said to come from a family home in Darien. Outbuildings behind it, mostly early twentieth century, include dairy barns and an ice house. The land passed from Henry Laurens and Lachlan McIntosh to William Brailsford, then to the Troup and Dent families, who named the central portion Hofwyl. Rice was grown there as late as 1917, though it never regained its prewar profitability, and a dairy later sustained the family. The estate was given to the state in 1973, and it illustrates the rise and decline of coastal Georgia's rice industry.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the state Department of Natural Resources, which received it from the last family owner; the form lists condition as good, with the property marked unoccupied and a museum in process.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.739793-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/76000635.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000635/b47d0c7ac3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000635/b47d0c7ac3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hofwyl-Broadfield_Plantation,_back_view,_Glynn_County,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hofwyl-Broadfield_Plantation,_back_view,_Glynn_County,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208430","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofwyl-Broadfield_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22058900"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/glynn-county/hofwyl-broadfield-plantation-76000635/"}
