Neel Reid of Hentz, Reid & Adler designed it, and it was built in 1922.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding example of the work of Atlanta architect Neel Reid and one of the most complete surviving examples of the Reid villa. It has stayed unaltered in design and plan since 1922. Its significance rests on its architecture and its unchanged state.","narrative":"Set on a knoll in one of Atlanta's finer residential sections, this limestone house was built in 1922 to designs by Neel Reid of the firm Hentz, Reid & Adler. Its form was adapted from a Georgian house in Chichester, England: a hipped-roof center block with flanking wings and a plain two-story facade. The oversized pedimented entrance, with rusticated pilasters and a broken segmental pediment, gives it an Italianate accent. Inside, a round entrance hall, a two-story rectangular stairwell and an octagonal library form a varied geometric plan that opens onto a walled formal garden cut into the hill, with a classical temple-like front hiding the garage. Reid also fitted sleeping and service porches, a large kitchen and ample storage into the formal layout. The house was listed because it is considered the best-preserved and perhaps most carefully executed Reid home in Atlanta, and because it has remained unaltered since construction.","period_of_significance":"1922","architect_builder":"Hentz, Reid & Adler (Neel Reid, principal designer)","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival (Georgian manor-type house with Italianate entrance detailing)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, privately owned, in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.987972-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/76000633.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000633/69da6661a6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000633/69da6661a6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Cynthia Jennings","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_B_Tompkins_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cynthia Jennings</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_B_Tompkins_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80004457","name":"Peachtree Heights Park","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/peachtree-heights-park-80004457/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208366","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_B._Tompkins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14686652"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/tompkins-henry-b-house-76000633/"}
