Callahan was a pioneer in steamboat service on the inland waterways of south Georgia and north Florida and, in his day, the largest individual naval stores operator in the world. Architecturally it is one of the most outstanding neo-classical houses in southwest Georgia, noted for its monumental portico, close adherence to symmetry and excellent preservation.","narrative":"Built around 1907 at 200 Evans Street in Bainbridge, Georgia, this two-and-one-half-story weatherboarded house is a high-style example of neo-classical design. A monumental four-columned portico with Corinthian columns rises above a curved one-story porch that wraps three sides. Beveled glass doorways with diamond tracery mark the center of both floors. Inside, a central hall organizes the plan, and the two front parlors and dining room carry hand-painted murals by an unknown Chicago artist. Murals in one parlor show scenes of the Flint River, including a Callahan Line boat. The house was the home of John Wesley Callahan, born in 1858, who built a business career in naval stores and a wholesale grocery company and operated five steamboats on the Flint River. It was recognized for its historical associations and for its close symmetry and well-preserved condition. It remains a residence.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neo-classical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a private residence, described as being in an excellent state of preservation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.908344-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/76000616.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000616/68e82f846e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000616/68e82f846e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Rivera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J.W._Callahan_House_(from_sidewalk),_Bainbridge.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Rivera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J.W._Callahan_House_(from_sidewalk),_Bainbridge.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"87001907","name":"Bainbridge Residential Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/bainbridge-residential-historic-district-87001907/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207728","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._W._Callahan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29094296"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/decatur-county/callahan-j-w-house-76000616/"}
