It is admired for its architecture and period furniture, and for a painting collection built up under Gari Melchers. It occupies the site of the royal Governor's residence, Government House.","narrative":"Telfair Academy, on Telfair Square in Savannah, is a museum that grew out of a family town house. English architect William Jay designed the original mansion, built in 1818 for Alexander Telfair, son of Georgia Governor Edward Telfair. It stands on the site of Government House, the royal governor's residence. Jay's hand shows in the entrance portico with stairs at each end, composite columns and an entablature that wraps the building as a stringcourse. Inside are an octagonal salon, a round-ended dining room and marble mantels by John Frazee. Mary Telfair left the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society in 1875, and it opened as a free art museum in 1886. Carl N. Brandt is credited with the 1880s enlargement, which added the Rotunda, the Cast Room and an attic story. The collection includes early Savannah portraits and paintings acquired under Gari Melchers. It is the oldest museum in the southeast.","period_of_significance":"1818-1820, 1880's","architect_builder":"William Jay and Carl N.
