T. Ellis House or \"The Castle\".","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the outstanding examples of Gothic Revival residential architecture in California surviving from the Gold Rush period. It also marks the achievement of Jose Manuel Ramirez, a Chilean miner who was one of four partners who laid out Marysville in 1850.","narrative":"Built between 1851 and 1854, this brick house at 220 Fifth Street in Marysville was commissioned by Jose Manuel Ramirez, a Chilean-born miner who arrived in 1849 with about thirty Chilean workers. Ramirez was one of four partners who laid out the town in 1850. The house, later called \"The Castle\", is Gothic Revival in style. It has steep pointed gables with elaborate wooden bargeboards, finials, lancet windows and small metal balconies. Its brick walls are plastered and scored to resemble stone. They are about 30 inches thick, a construction attributed to Ramirez's experience of earthquakes in Chile. An 1856 lithograph confirms many of the balconies, porch pillars and ornaments as original. A rear addition was made around 1916. The nomination presents the house as one of California's finest surviving Gold Rush era Gothic Revival residences and as a reminder of Marysville's founding and of a Chilean immigrant's success.","period_of_significance":"1851-1854","architect_builder":"Jose Manuel Rameriz","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, and occupied as a private residence; a rear addition was built around 1916.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.143617-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/76000545.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000545/dd5aec8b5c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000545/dd5aec8b5c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Rifflebox","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jose_Manuel_Ramirez_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rifflebox</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jose_Manuel_Ramirez_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123862433","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133572154"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/yuba-county/ramirez-jose-manuel-house-76000545/"}
