It is owned by the City of Sacramento.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of the few surviving early-1850s residences in Sacramento and the city's only existing example of residential Greek Revival architecture. It was also home to several figures of local, state and national importance, including two of California's first four governors, Peter Burnett and John Neely Johnson.","narrative":"Built in 1853 at 1029 F Street, this brick Greek Revival house is the only surviving example of residential Greek Revival architecture in Sacramento and one of the few homes from the early 1850s still standing. It has two stories over a ground-level basement, a shallow attic, and a double veranda beneath a triangular pediment, supported by octagonal wooden columns. Inside are a long staircase with a hand-turned rail, two marble fireplaces and traces of stencil work. The house also has notable occupants. Peter Burnett, California's first governor, lived there in 1853. John Neely Johnson, the fourth governor, lived there in 1856, and Judge David S. Terry moved in after him. Later residents included a pharmacist, H.C. Kirk, whose family kept the house for many years. The house was later divided into apartments and, by the mid-1970s, stood boarded up and fenced, awaiting restoration, amid cleared land planned for a neighborhood park.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"At the time of nomination the windows and doors were boarded up, the house was fenced, and it was in fairly sound condition but needed repair; later correspondence reports vandalism and stripping of the house while it awaited restoration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.27985-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/76000512.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000512/bfc7185968-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000512/bfc7185968-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"David Sawyer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson_House_Sacramento.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">David Sawyer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson_House_Sacramento.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860618","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Neely_Johnson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6106609"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sacramento-county/johnson-j-neely-house-76000512/"}
