The grounds also include a pine tree marking the site of the Rowlandson garrison, where King Philip's War began in Lancaster on February 10, 1676.","narrative":"Set on 25 acres running from Main Street to Roper's Brook in Lancaster, this white clapboard mansion was built in 1846 for Nathaniel Thayer, a Boston financier whose firm became one of the most powerful in New England. His son, Nathaniel Thayer III, had the house redesigned in 1902 and added the two-story wings, giving it its Georgian Revival appearance, with a three-story hip-roofed center, a pedimented pavilion, paired Doric columns and a mahogany stairway surviving from the original house. Thayer descendants lived there until 1943, when it was sold to Atlantic Union College. It later served as an administration building and a men's dormitory, and since 1973 it has been a music conservatory. The grounds also hold a pine tree planted in 1853 to mark the Rowlandson garrison, where King Philip's War began in Lancaster in 1676 and where Mary Rowlandson was taken captive.","period_of_significance":"1846-1943","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by Atlantic Union College and used as a Music Conservatory since 1973; restored over a three-year period.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.131269-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/7972/63797278/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/76000302.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000302/aafc20df3a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000302/aafc20df3a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Paul Keleher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thayer_music_building.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Keleher</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thayer_music_building.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797278","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathaniel_Thayer_Estate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6969892"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/thayer-nathaniel-estate-76000302/"}
