It was a Harrington family farm; the builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a good example of early eighteenth-century architecture and is notable for having evolved from two separate houses into one. Its framing details show how the two structures were joined. An elm on the property, planted in 1697, is said to be the oldest elm in Massachusetts.","narrative":"Built about 1710 on land first allotted to Robert Harrington in 1634, this two-story, four-bay farmhouse in southwest Weston grew from two separate structures that were joined into one. Clues remain in the framing: a doubled support post beside the front door, rafters of differing lengths, thinner framing on the west side, and garret floorboards that run in different directions. In the early nineteenth century, Stephen Harrington removed the original central chimney, added a two-story east ell with the kitchen fireplace and brick oven, and installed the present staircase and Federal-style trim. A 1908 restoration lowered the ell roof. A rooster weathervane on the rear shed was made around 1820 by Henry McIntire, who lived on the farm. An elm planted in 1697 stands nearby and is reputed to be the oldest in Massachusetts. The house is believed to be the fifth oldest in Weston.","period_of_significance":"1710","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial, with Federal period alterations","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, private residence; restored in 1908.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.312144-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/7955/63795508/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/76000281.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000281/912c7472be-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000281/912c7472be-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestonMA_HarringtonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestonMA_HarringtonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795508","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrington_House_(Weston,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715508"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/harrington-house-76000281/"}
