It holds 53 structures and about 20 mill and building sites, mostly dating from the 1810s to 1830s.","why_significant":"The district is significant as a relatively unchanged 19th-century rural community with a fine grouping of Federal and Greek Revival buildings. It also contains sites of mills important to the early industrial development of the area, including the first wood-pulp paper mill in America.","narrative":"Old Curtisville, also known as Interlaken, is a rural village district northwest of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, spread over 170 acres along Route 183 and Willard Hill Road. It contains 53 structures, mostly two-story Federal and Greek Revival houses, plus the sites of about 20 mills and other buildings. Notable buildings include the 1870 French Second Empire Citizens Hall, the 1826 brick Congregational Church, Burrall's Store and Post Office, and the 1833 Curtisville Inn with its Greek fretwork detail. The village grew around seven small mills, with a chair factory, foundry, distillery and other works in the late 1820s and 1830s. The railroad bypassed it, so growth slowed and the setting stayed largely intact. After the Civil War the Pagenstacher mill, the first wood-pulp paper mill in America, operated here briefly. Stone dams, raceways and a stone bridge survive. The artist Ammi Philips once lived in the district.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Most houses are said to have been built by the same unnamed master builder.","architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival, with French Second Empire (Citizens Hall)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; mostly private residences plus religious, educational and commercial uses. Citizens Hall has been restored; none of the old mills stands, though dams, raceways and a stone bridge remain.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.067058-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/86/7942/63794286/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/76000250.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000250/56cd670b41-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000250/56cd670b41-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Bancroft-Curtisville_Hotel,_Interlaken_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Bancroft-Curtisville_Hotel,_Interlaken_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794286","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Curtisville_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7083805"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/old-curtisville-historic-district-76000250/"}
