It was built the same year work was under way on the Akron-Cleveland section of the Ohio-Erie Canal. It is also a rare local example of late Federal vernacular brick construction.","narrative":"Built in 1826, this plain two-story brick house at 7733 Canal Road in Valley View faces the Ohio-Erie Canal. It was built for Stephen Frazee, who settled the land in 1812 and was described in a county history as among the prominent pioneers. Tax records date the house to the summer when canal construction was under way nearby; the canal opened on July 4, 1827. The house is one of the two earliest brick houses in the lower Cuyahoga Valley and a rare local example of late Federal vernacular brick work. It has a five-bay facade with a center entrance, brick window and door heads in place of stone lintels, sandstone sills, and stepped gable parapets with two chimneys at each end. A small one-story ell-shaped wing stands at the south end, and its age relative to the main block is uncertain. John Hynton acquired the house in 1861, and it is still known locally by his name. At the time of nomination it was vacant.","period_of_significance":"1826","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Federal vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and unoccupied at the time of nomination, in private ownership.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.02246-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76000211.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000211/08059f5a11-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76000211/08059f5a11-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WEST_FRONT_-_Stephen_Frazee_House,_7733_Canal_Road,_Valley_View,_Cuyahoga_County,_OH_HABS_OHIO,18-VAVI,1-1.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WEST_FRONT_-_Stephen_Frazee_House,_7733_Canal_Road,_Valley_View,_Cuyahoga_County,_OH_HABS_OHIO,18-VAVI,1-1.tif"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85001123","name":"Valley Railway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/valley-railway-historic-district-85001123/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987675","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Frazee_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q86728883"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/frazee-stephen-house-76000211/"}
