Washington bought it for her, and it was here that he last saw her. It has been regarded as a historic shrine since her residence, and it was carefully restored in 1929-30.","narrative":"Mary Washington House, at 1200 Charles Street in Fredericksburg, is a long frame dwelling of one-and-one-half and two stories, set on a low brick and stone basement. Its southern section dates from the mid-eighteenth century, and further portions were added later in that century and early in the next. The exterior has beaded weatherboards, gable and gambrel roofs, and louvered blinds. Inside, Federal-style trim includes a paneled drawing room with an elaborate chimney piece. The property matters chiefly for its association with George Washington's mother. Betty and Fielding Lewis sold it to Michael Robinson in 1761, and in 1772 Washington bought it for his mother, who had lived at Ferry Farm since 1739. She died here in August 1789, and Washington last saw her in the house. Visitors have treated it as a shrine ever since. The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities acquired it in 1890, and architect Philip Stern directed a careful restoration in 1929-30.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Philip Stern (restoration architect, 1929-1930)","architectural_style":"Vernacular Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered, on its original site; it is a museum and is owned by a preservation association.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.839928-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/6808/41680855/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002111.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002111/f8ff71175f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002111/f8ff71175f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Mojo Hand","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Washington_House_2022.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mojo Hand</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Washington_House_2022.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680855","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Ball_Washington_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1906415"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fredericksburg/washington-mary-house-75002111/"}
