It was probably built in the 1780s and existed in its present form by 1796.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an uncommonly grand and remarkably well-preserved late-eighteenth-century Tidewater Virginia country house. Its ballroom and dining room are described as among Virginia's most impressive eighteenth-century rooms, mixing late colonial and Federal detailing. It was also the ancestral home of two prominent mid-nineteenth-century figures and served as a field hospital during the Battle of Fredericksburg.","narrative":"Federal Hill is a large frame house on a small hill at what was once the western edge of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Built probably in the 1780s, it was first a farm residence and now sits as a town house in a garden with an early octagonal gazebo. The house has beaded weatherboards, a modillion cornice, dormers, and a central pedimented pavilion on its west front. Inside, the ballroom has fluted Doric pilasters and an elaborate chimney wall, the stair is made entirely of mahogany, and the dining room has Adamesque detail. These rooms blend late colonial and Federal styles. Robert Brooke, governor of Virginia from 1794 to 1796, probably built it. Thomas Reed Rootes later owned it, and his grandsons Howell Cobb and Thomas R. R. Cobb became prominent figures. During the Civil War the Army of the Potomac used the house as a field hospital. After a period of decline it was restored, and its original east balcony was found in storage and replaced.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered; in use as a private residence, restored after a period of deterioration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.585031-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/6808/41680841/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002110.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002110/20bd1d6cf0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002110/20bd1d6cf0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Justinandsarah","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Federal_Hill_504_Hanover_Street_Fredericksburg_VA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Justinandsarah</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Federal_Hill_504_Hanover_Street_Fredericksburg_VA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680841","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Hill_(Fredericksburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15217521"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fredericksburg/federal-hill-75002110/"}
