It has an early-19th-century rear ell and an early-20th-century side wing.","why_significant":"It is one of a small number of glebe houses still standing in Virginia, with a blend of colonial and Federal features. Its woodwork dates from after its 1807 sale into private hands, suggesting the parish provided only plain quarters for its ministers. The nomination treats it as a potential source of information on the social standing of colonial Anglican clergy.","narrative":"Set among flat, open fields in Charles City County, this five-bay, story-and-a-half brick house was built as the glebe, or minister's residence, of Westover Parish, probably between 1732 and 1757. The parish bought the land near Charles City Court House in 1732. Peter Fontaine, its first minister, served until 1757. The brickwork is Flemish bond with glazed headers, and the house has exterior end chimneys with pent closets. Early in the nineteenth century a rear ell was added, the openings were changed, and a Federal-style entrance with a fanlight was installed. A frame wing was added in the early twentieth century. Only the stair appears to survive from the colonial period. The house was sold in 1807, when Virginia required glebes to be sold. It is one of few glebe houses still standing in the state, and its plain original finish and later decoration shed light on how parishes housed their clergy.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular with Georgian and Federal elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.769213-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/6800/41680022/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002108.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002108/80ddf5cad7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002108/80ddf5cad7-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"unknown HABS photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Westover_Glebe_House_HABS_VA1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown HABS photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Westover_Glebe_House_HABS_VA1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680022","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glebe_of_Westover_Parish","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712365"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charles-city-county/glebe-of-westover-parish-75002108/"}
