It was probably built by Andrew Buchanan around 1790, with an east wing added in 1918-19.","why_significant":"The nomination calls the house a good example of a lesser plantation house of the early republic and part of a group of five eighteenth-century houses overlooking Falmouth and Fredericksburg. Its hilltop site is an important element in the local visual environment. The Union army used the site as an artillery position during the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, and the gun pits remain visible.","narrative":"Clearview is a two-story, hipped-roof frame house with weatherboard siding, built late in the eighteenth century on Stafford Heights above the Rappahannock River near Falmouth, Virginia. Andrew Buchanan, a major in the Caroline County militia during the Revolution, bought the property in 1786 and is its probable builder. Insurance policies from 1796 to 1839 record the house with a study, kitchen and meat house. A one-and-one-half-story wing was added to the east in 1918-19. Inside, the house keeps Federal-period woodwork, including a parlor mantel, wainscoting, and fretted and denticulated cornices. The hilltop site overlooks Fredericksburg, and Union forces placed artillery here during the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862; earthen gun pits still surround a board-and-batten barn. The property was listed for its architecture as a good example of a lesser plantation house of the early republic, for its place among five eighteenth-century houses overlooking the two towns, and for its Civil War association. About 22 acres are included.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Andrew Buchanan, probable builder","architectural_style":"Federal elements; late eighteenth-century plantation house with Greek Revival doorway","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, with preservation work in progress; used as a private residence and retaining the air of a working farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.666132-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/6837/41683759/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002039.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002039/4e1b4cd2b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002039/4e1b4cd2b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CLEARVIEW,_FALMOUTH,_STAFFORD_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"70000825","name":"Falmouth Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/falmouth-historic-district-70000825/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683759","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clearview_(Falmouth,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15210885"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/stafford-county/clearview-75002039/"}
