It follows a grid plan laid out by George Washington in 1749 and contains about one hundred buildings on roughly 140 acres.","why_significant":"The nomination presents Washington as a well-preserved nineteenth-century courthouse town with a fine collection of public, commercial and domestic architecture typical of the region. Its significance also reaches back to the 1749 town plan by the young surveyor George Washington, which still largely governs the layout and half-acre lots. Several key buildings were built by James Leake Powers, reputed to have worked for Jefferson at the University of Virginia.","narrative":"Washington is a small Virginia Piedmont town at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the seat of Rappahannock County since 1833. Its street grid of two main streets, five cross streets and 51 half-acre lots was surveyed by George Washington in 1749, and the layout largely survives. The courthouse, a Flemish-bond brick building with a wooden belfry, was built in 1833 by James Leake Powers, who also built Trinity Episcopal Church and the former Presbyterian church, now the library. Around the courthouse on Gay Street are a clerk's office, jail, churches, a Masonic hall and a bank. Commercial buildings include the Washington House tavern and stores that keep original shelves and drawers. Larger houses such as The Meadows and The Maples surround the village. About one hundred buildings lie within the town limits. Nearly all of the nineteenth-century public buildings and many early houses remain, which is why the town was listed.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (the 1975 form checks both; a later inventory lists periods such as 1750-1899 and 1900-45 for individual resources)","architect_builder":"James Leake Powers (courthouse, Trinity Episcopal Church, former Presbyterian church); town plat by George Washington, 1749","architectural_style":"Nineteenth-century courthouse town; Jeffersonian courthouse, Gothic Revival, Roman Revival, Federal, Eastlake and Italianate buildings","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked good and altered; the town is described as remarkably unaffected by change, with neglected buildings being purchased and renovated.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.867031-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/6828/41682839/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002033.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002033/d4680456d3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002033/d4680456d3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"self","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rappahannock_County_Courthouse,_May_2016.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">self</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rappahannock_County_Courthouse,_May_2016.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682839","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Historic_District_(Washington,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16902941"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rappahannock-county/washington-historic-district-75002033/"}
