It was built for Shelburne Parish after the vestry hired Appolis Cooper in 1772, with construction dated to about 1773.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a rare surviving example of a specialized type of ecclesiastical architecture and one of the few extant glebe houses for which the original specifications survive. It was also the focus of a rare case of resistance to the disestablishment of the Anglican Church in Virginia. The parish resisted the 1802 act ordering glebe sales, and the property was not sold into private hands until 1840.","narrative":"Shelburne Parish in Loudoun County bought 465 acres in 1773 to supply a glebe, a house and land for its minister, and hired Appolis Cooper to build the dwelling. The vestry order specified a two-story brick or stone house twenty by forty-eight feet, with two rooms below, three above, and a full cellar. The surviving brick house follows that plan closely, though it is two feet shorter than specified. It sits on a hilltop above the North Fork of Goose Creek. Nineteenth-century changes included Greek Revival woodwork, a doorway and porches, altered window openings, and a kitchen wing; a frame wing was added in 1950. The parish resisted an 1802 act ordering the sale of all glebes. A court settled the case in 1830, and the glebe was sold to John and Andrew Aldridge in 1840. Few glebe houses with surviving specifications remain. Outbuildings include a springhouse-type stone building, an ice house, and a former kitchen now used as a cottage.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Appolis Cooper (builder, hired November 1772)","architectural_style":"Georgian with Greek Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered; in use as a private residence on a working cattle farm, with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.499959-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/31/6816/41681631/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/75002023.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002023/39ac772d34-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/75002023/39ac772d34-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GLEBE_OF_SHELBURNE_PARISH,_LOUDOUN_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"82001822","name":"Goose Creek Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/goose-creek-historic-district-82001822/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681631","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glebe_of_Shelburne_Parish","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5567447"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/loudoun-county/glebe-of-shelburne-parish-75002023/"}
